  Task 1

How do you think companies can encourage their employees to take part in community activities?

  - Give employees days off to tutor students or help clean the park

  - Put the volunteer work information online

  - Offer monetary rewards

  【Response】

I think companies can encourage their employees to take part in their community by giving them days off for doing community service. Many adults would probably enjoy contributing to the communities they live in, whether through tutoring or by cleaning up parks. But adults often lack the time to engage in these things, since they have to deal with work and household duties. My father, for example, often works overtime. When he finally comes home at night, he has only a few hours to relax or interact with us; there’s no time throughout a day for him to perform community service. Many adults are in similar situations, and that’s why companies need to give their employees days off to really encourage them to take part in community service.

  Task 2

Do you think it is important for people to learn about the local history of their hometown?

  【Response】

Yes, I do think that it’s important for people to learn about the local history of their hometown. For example, if you know the history of many locations, then you can explain that history to friends or relatives visiting from out of town. Doing so makes their trip much more interesting. [pause] Knowing the local history also connects you with your hometown. When you pass by that old, dirty bridge, instead of thinking about how ugly it is, you look back on its history—when it was constructed, and by whom, and all the stories associated with it. In this way your hometown takes on more character, and in this way daily life in your hometown becomes more meaningful.

  Task 3

  Task 4

  Task 5

  Task 6

  1.Integrated Writing

  2.Independent Writing

  [Question]

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

It is important to read or watch the news presented by people whose views are similar to your own or read or watch the news presented by whose views are different from your own.

  [Response]

In today’s society, people tend to look for news that presents points of view similar to their own. This is mainly because people want to confirm what they already believe. However, we must try to listen to the views of others who disagree with us, because only by doing so are we able to create communities with others and better our knowledge of the world.

In current communities, people can often be divided because of their political beliefs and views on a whole variety of subjects. This is very often caused by the information they receive from the news, which most people is a type of daily exposure. But as history has shown, the best way to develop society and move forward is to work together. The term the ‘greater good’ is a well-known idiom because it shows the value of individuals acknowledging everyone is human and that we have to collaborate. This means building communities that understand that their differences are important, but it cannot be achieved if only one side is understood. We cannot build connections with the other side if we never listen or do not know them. Exposure to different perspectives in news is important to the health of communities, as demonstrated by the fact that countries where other cultures are often embraced—where various news channels present multiple perspectives—have better living standards.

Creating strong groups is important, but there is also the wider idea of gaining new information. Everyone has his or her go-to media outlet, television show, podcast or social media account, but learning what others believe or know is also important. The pursuit of knowledge is a noble goal and should be applauded. Even when you don’t agree with the views displayed on television from, say, a politician such as Donald Trump, it is crucial to know their motivations and ideas. Whatever our personal opinions, exposing ourselves to other opinions reduces ignorance and improves overall knowledge and understanding. And even if you disagree with another perspective, at least you now have the information necessary for a proper rebuttal.

In conclusion, consuming different types of media is important. That is true even when a news channel might have its own agenda and the content might not be what you want to hear. You can have your own opinions and make your own decisions, but do so based on all information when possible. This might seem difficult, but it’s an important step to helping us build better communities and expand our new knowledge of the world.
